Distrikt (Collective)
All over the world. We are among you.
Greatest accomplishment(s) in photography/art: Being a part of the PLA series, fool. Oh, and the first Distrikt book was just published. That’s pretty proper. Another feat that keeps Kelly busy is his efforts to someday realize his concept of the “buried man self portrait”, where he hopes to somehow program his camera to capture an image of himself at an undetermined future date, after he is old and dead. It will require a very long self-timer and a shovel.
Favorite camera (weapon of choice): Yashica Electro 35, Canon G10
Your interpretation of the Permanent Light Archive series: To us, the Permanent Light Archive series represents the means of transporting information about the folks who document skate culture to the masses. P-L-A is what’s up.
Least favorite subject(s) to shoot: All of us at Distrikt hate shooting photos of hipsters.
When did you decide to be a photographer? We think it was after everyone else decided that they were photographers.
Artist Statement: Distrikt is an international collective and visual communications agency that believes great work comes from group insight. We collaborate with brands we love, and work with a variety of cross-genre artists, designers, and photographers from all walks of life and with unique tastes. We operate as a collective because there is strength in numbers… and so we can distribute the blame when an idea goes South. Members of Distrikt include Kelly D. Williams, Alison Grippo, Larry Mayorga, and many others. In addition to this crew, we work cooperatively with other creative individuals on a per-project basis. Sometimes we don’t speak to each other, but hopefully we always speak to you.
